Fillings

Dentistry has improved a lot in recent years and new filling materials are being introduced all the time. Here at Ingle Farm Dental our dentists keep up to date with all the latest developments and are able to choose the right filling material for the job; whether it be a white composite resin, white glass ionomer cement or silver amalgam.

White composite resin

This is the most common material and is suitable for most simple fillings. The shade of the material is matched to shade of your tooth making composite resin one of the most widely used materials today.

Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC)

GIC's are not as strong as composite resin, so this material doesn't last well by itself. However, the fact that it contains fluoride makes it a great choice for temporary fillings, or restoring baby teeth in children or as a 'healing' base under the stronger composite resin.

Amalgam

Amalgam has had bad press in recent times but it remains a strong inert material that has stood the test of time and keen scrutiny over the years. It is still an ideal material for large or deep fillings or as a base under white porcelain crowns.

Most dental restorations can last for many years but they are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. Your dentist will tell you at each checkup whether any of your fillings are wearing out.
